In a landmark ruling in Aruna Ramchandra Shanbaug vs Union of India, the Supreme Court has created a legal framework for passive, non-voluntary euthanasia under very strict conditions. High courts can now entertain petitions to withdraw life support of patients in what is known as persistent vegetative state (PVS).
