Revenge in Rayalaseema

Once you bloody your hands, there will always be more blood; only death washes it off. That’s an old saying told with chilling simplicity in Rayalaseema, the southern part of Andhra Pradesh that borders Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

For decades, the region, especially Anantapur district, has been a theatre of killings in wars defined by caste and political domination, led by wealthy landlords and powerful families. Over the years, personal egos and inter-village feuds led to the rise of faction lords who groomed private armies to take on or kill rivals.
